Article: More than Just a Job Post

Items to consider when posting your job(s) include:

  • Information about your company Job seekers like to have information about the company before they apply. Why are top performers attracted to your company?
  • Generic Title Common well known titles attract more job seekers.
  • Confidential Company Unless absolutely necessary, don’t list the company as confidential. Top performers want to know who they are applying to. The number of applies to confidential companies is normally a factor of 10 lower than other job posts.
  • Candidate Location Your job will be posted on the internet. Candidates from across the USA and even the world will see your post. If you are looking at local candidates or only those in a specific geographic region, make sure you emphasize this in the job post.
  • Company Job Descriptions Company job descriptions drive candidates away from your post. Remember your job post should be a marketing message attracting top talent.
  • Job Detail Your job post needs to stand out. Make sure you talk about challenges of the job, career path, opportunities. What are the best selling points of the job? Sell the opportunity. Remember unlike newspaper ads, you have the space to describe the job in enough detail to attract the people you want.
  • Keywords Job seekers perform most job searches by keyword. Therefore you need to include appropriate keywords within your job detail that the candidates may search on.
  • Contact Information How do you want to be contacted by candidates? Include only avenues that you are able to effectively manage. If tracking responses from the job post are important, make sure systems are in place to monitor applicant tracking to discern the effectiveness of the job post. Receiving candidate resumes by fax or mail aren’t easily tracked.
